On November 22, 1952, Airman Newsome was on-board a transport aircraft with 52 other servicemembers heading to Alaska when the plane crashed into a mountain during severe weather.

“The flight really became out of sight. With the glaciers and everything coming down, there was no way to identify the plane after it was first spotted,” said Deborah Brown, Airman Newsome’s great niece and retired Army Lieutenant Colonel.

Brown said for decades, the crash site was buried in snow until National Guardsmen rediscovered the wreck in 2012. But it wasn’t until 2021 that his family got a call saying a shirt was found with Airman Newsome’s name inscribed on the collar.

“My mom and I took it over to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to see if we could have it put in a shadow box. Two months ago is when we received information that they had identified more parts and they wanted to know if we wanted to do a military service for him,” Brown recounted.
